Vietnamese Pacific Oyster

Introducing Vietnamese Pacific Oyster

What is Pacific Oyster?
The Pacific oyster, scientifically known as Crassostrea gigas, is a highly sought-after shellfish known for its plump meat and rich, briny flavor. Originating from the Pacific coast of Asia, this oyster is valued not only for its culinary qualities but also for its nutritional benefits, being a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Where is it farmed in Vietnam?

1. Oyster Farming in Quảng Ninh, Northern Vietnam

Quảng Ninh, renowned for its natural beauty and seafood, is home to the Pacific oyster, especially in Vân Đồn district. Introduced from Taiwan 15 years ago, this area boasts ideal aquaculture conditions, including calm seas and high salinity. With around 4,000 hectares dedicated to oyster farming, Vân Đồn is the largest producer in Vietnam, supplying over 70,000 tonnes annually.

Oysters thrive on plankton and algae, eliminating the need for additional feeding, but strict environmental monitoring is essential. Farms conduct regular water quality tests to meet European standards, ensuring a clean habitat free of contaminants. The oyster farms have also become popular tourist attractions, offering fresh oysters and unique local dishes.

To enhance the oyster's value, producers are diversifying into products like oyster sauce, oyster cakes, and extracts, showcasing the versatility and economic potential of Quảng Ninh’s Pacific oysters.

2. Oyster Farming in Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu, Southern Vietnam

In Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu, farmers are successfully cultivating Pacific oysters due to their high survival rate and strong market demand. These oysters can be harvested in five to six months, unlike indigenous varieties that take up to 16 months. Around 40 households in Long Sơn Commune farm oysters on 26 hectares, while Phước Tỉnh Commune has about 70 households. The provincial Fisheries Sub-department promotes this eco-friendly aquaculture, enhancing farmers' incomes and supporting local consumption in the southern region.

Vietnam Export Situation of Oyster
Vietnam has emerged as a significant player in the global oyster market, exporting a variety of shellfish, including Pacific oysters. With its expanding aquaculture industry, Vietnam benefits from a favorable climate and rich biodiversity, allowing it to meet international quality standards.

Vietnam's oyster exports have shown significant growth, with a 52% increase in May 2024 alone. In the first five months of the year, export value reached nearly $7 million, up 31% from 2023. The country primarily exports chilled fresh oysters, with Taiwan being the dominant market, accounting for 82% of exports. Additionally, exports to Laos have tripled, reaching over $713,000. Other mollusk exports, including scallops and snails, also experienced notable growth, increasing by 42% and 18%, respectively.
